Taxi slots are a special roster designation with 4 or 6 allocated spots intended for young players to develop without taking up bench space. These spots do not count against your 17 regular roster spots.
Function and Eligibility
- Between the Goblin Bowl and the final game of the next NFL preseason, there are 6 taxi squad spots. After the final game of the preseason, the taxi squad is trimmed to 4 spots.
- Players eligible for the taxi squad must be in their freshman or sophomore year.
- Players on the taxi squad are not part of a team’s regular roster, and therefore are not eligible to start.
- A taxi squad player may be promoted to an open roster spot at any time.
- Any eligible player may be moved onto the taxi squad before the start of the regular season.
- After the start of the regular season a rookie or sophomore acquired via trade or free agency may be moved onto the taxi squad the day they are acquired by requesting permission from the commissioner.
- After the start of the regular season a player who has been on the team for more than 24 hours can not be moved to the taxi squad. They can, however, be cut, re-signed, and moved the same day they are re-acquired. Beware though – they’ll have to clear waivers, and other teams will be able to bid on the player once they are cut.
