Extra Seasoning Volume 3 – Issue 2 | The 2023 Trade Compendium

It’s finally back: a full, “simplified” list of every GM’s trades over the course of the 2023 season. These trades span eleven months. The 2023 season officially began on January 8, 2023. The trade deadline was November 20, 2023.

If a player was both sent and received by a GM in separate trades, they are removed from that GM’s trade chart. Of course, if they were sent, received, and sent again, they would appear only once under the Sent side. And vice-versa.

This year I have completely removed references to the 2023 draft. If a trade was made for a pick in the 2023 draft, the draft pick is simply replaced with the player who was drafted. For future picks, the team who the pick belongs to is listed. If no team is listed, that means the pick belongs to the GM in question.

Last year I included an aggregated estimate of how much asset-value a GM gained. You can read last year’s post for more info. Although it was well received, this year I have forgone that calculation for a bit of light commentary instead. Ultimately I’m hesitant to ascribe a concrete value gained/lost. Like I said last year, asset-value doesn’t always tell the full story of a team.

Without further ado, each team is listed below. The order is based on the rarely used metric of league-wide standing.

Would have been great if not for, well – you know

Commentary: This GM wanted to go all-in this year and the result speaks for itself. Upgrading their QB1 from Kirk Cousins to CJ Stroud is a massive long-term gain. The RB2 situation took a hit due to Nick Chubb’s gruesome week two injury, but moving on from Akers/Mattison as depth RBs to Swift/Warren/Stevenson was excellent trading. The GM made some good moves to recover from what could have been a season-ruining injury.

The WR corps suffered slightly on paper but it was probably worth it.

Losing Mike Evans before his best year since 2019 was unlucky. Getting Keenan Allen’s career-best year was conversely very lucky.

Upgrading WR1 from Waddle to Lamb and keeping W2/WR3 at lateral moves of a similar archetype is pretty impressive. But it came at the cost of also giving up Michael Pittman and Deebo Samuel to only get Jameson Williams in return. The GM clearly banked on George Pickens being able to hold it down as a WR4 this year. Given the RB depth they achieved as a trade off and Pickens’ decent performance this year, I would say that was a wise decision.

Verdict: The team gave up a 1st and 3rd in 2026 to improve from 8-6 to 12-2 this year. If a distant 1st is the price you have to pay to secure a first round bye, you make that trade every time.

Imagine paying Purdy to upgrade from Swift to Pollard

Commentary: Another GM who wanted to go all-in this season. TheCarlos began laying the groundwork last season for a rebuild with over twenty trades to acquire four future 1sts and five future 2nds. This season, TheCarlos spent those newly acquired picks and more in an attempt to win it all.

Trading Justin Herbert for Josh Allen paid off this year, but replacing QB2 Brock Purdy with Kyler Murray was arguably a lateral move. Losing Ja’Marr Chase may have a long term detriment, but given that the team came into the season with Jaylen Warren at RB1, deals had to be made to shore up the running back room.

The team sold mostly draft picks and young prospects to acquire a mix of established veterans and win-now pieces. But is the team’s future completely wrecked by giving up all their picks through 2025? Below is a complex analysis of how many fantasy-relevant years the team’s new acquisitions have left.

New AcquisitionAre They Cooked?
Puka NacuaNot Cooked
Kenneth Walker IIINot Cooked
A.J. BrownNot Cooked
Josh AllenNot Cooked
Diontae JohnsonProbably Not Cooked
Kyler MurrayProbably Not Cooked
Tony PollardPossibly Cooked
Jerome FordPossibly Cooked
Travis KelceProbably Cooked
Adam ThielenBurnt

Despite going all-in, the team managed to acquire some franchise assets that can last at least a couple more years. But if depth players like Tony Pollard and Jerome Ford are fantasy-irrelevant next year, the team may have to either sell another two years worth of picks or think about a rebuild. Not to mention how much of the team’s fantasy production this year relied on an aging Travis Kelce.

Verdict: If the team can get most of the band back together next year for a second championship window, then it was worth losing Ja’Marr Chase and increasing the team’s average age. If not, then this year will have been a failure given that the team failed to make it out of the first round of the playoffs.

Commentary: Rule 1 didn’t prevent TSteggs from making moves this year (6 of 8 trades were with perennial rule-breaker TheCarlos). This was a team who came into the year with a lot of depth and a stacked roster. Trading away some of that depth to acquire another top-two WR was the right decision. Trading away a young dynamic RB like Kenneth Walker for Cooper Kupp and Derrick Henry in their final year(s) of fantasy relevance was probably a bad decision. But if the team wins a second championship that will be irrelevant.

Verdict: This team mostly made the right moves – including sometimes making no move at all (even if not by choice).

Commentary:

  • Upgraded Jeudy to a breakout WR1 in Nico Collins. ✅
  • Upgraded Christian Kirk to Tee Higgins in a textbook buy-low. ✅
  • Quietly built one of the best running back corps in Nilbog. ✅
  • Has all their picks plus an extra 1st and 2nd in 2024. ✅

Verdict: Aside from a swing and miss on Miles Sanders, the GM made some great deals this season.

Commentary: Ferguson for a 3rd was bad. But the 3rd ended up being Puka which is good. But the GM sold Puka for just a 2025 1st which is bad. But the GM also only spent a 1st to get DeAndre Hopkins who was surprisingly good. But DeAndre Hopkins is 31 which is bad.

Verdict: I’d probably rather have Ferguson than Hopkins, but I’d also rather have Wyatt’s 2025 1st instead of TSteggs’ 2024 1st.

Rashaad Penny is the real X-Factor here

Commentary: This team’s goal was to shed some age while still remaining a playoff contender. The GM achieved that. Shipping out Henry, Kupp, and Kelce while they still had value was a lucky break. Mixon, Samuel, and Waller may not be spring chickens, but they buy the team a little bit more time on their championship-window. The two extra 2024 1sts should also help this team finally sort out its depth problem.

Verdict: Made the playoffs with four 1sts next year. Good job.

Commentary: Giving up Nico Collins, Rachaad White, and two 1sts for Christian Kirk and Dalton Schultz is bad. It’s defensible at least: nobody expected Nico to breakout as a WR1 this year; paying Jeudy + two 1sts for Higgins & Schultz is a pretty good trade considering Jeudy flopped; giving up Higgins for Kirk was a classic playoff-push trade. But when you look at the final result – it’s bad.

Getting Bryce Young and a 1st in exchange for Josh Dobbs was a nice consolation though.

Verdict: Despite the mess, it still could have been worse.

Was Bryce really that bad?

Commentary: The team’s perennial QB problem still isn’t solved, but they managed to once again pull off some magic and push it back another year. Kamara ended up being one of the year’s biggest surprises, and was a great upgrade over Mixon for this season.

Chubb’s injury saved this GM’s compendium from looking too bad. Giving up a starting rookie QB (albeit one who is struggling) and a 1st for the Passtronaut is going to age very poorly if Josh Dobbs doesn’t land a starting gig next season.

Verdict: Missing the playoffs and not owning their own 2024 & 2025 1sts is a bad combination.

Talk about shedding age

Commentary: After going all-in last year, TigersMom entered a full on rebuild for 2023. How did it go? Well, the GM added a new QB1 in Purdy; replaced AJB with Waddle as a WR1; invested in four rookie running back prospects at the cost of Kamara and Pollard; and re-gained all their picks through 2026 (plus some extra).

The talent was probably there to compete for at least one more year. But as far as tear-downs go, you could do a lot worse than getting a stockpile of picks and young prospects. There’s a conundrum to rebuilding – do I rebuild while my assets still have value so I can get the most for them in trades? Or do I ride those assets until they’re fantasy irrelevant so that my championship window is as long as possible (but the rebuild lasts longer).

Verdict: The team probably didn’t need to rebuild yet, but they did. And it looks moderately successful.

Decent trade, given Rhamondre’s regression

Commentary: Let’s be honest, the GM took over an abysmal situation this year. For the most part, this team doesn’t have much to do except to wait and draft. Getting two extra firsts for the future is a good start. Perhaps the teardown could have gone further and aging players like Kareem Hunt, Tyler Lockett, and Taysom Hill could have also been dealt for picks. But you still need to be able to field a team at the end of the day.

Verdict: Made the best of a bad roster.
