Extra Seasoning Volume 4 – Issue 1 | The 2024 Trade Compendium

It’s here: a full, “simplified” list of every GM’s trades over the course of the 2024 season. These trades span eleven months. The 2024 season officially began on January 3, 2024. The trade deadline was November 18, 2024.

If a player was both sent and received by a GM in separate trades, they are removed from that GM’s trade chart. If they were sent, received, and sent again, they would appear only once under the Sent side. And vice-versa.

If a trade was made for a pick in the 2024 draft, the draft pick is replaced with the player who was drafted. For future picks, the team who the pick belongs to is listed. If no team is listed, that means the pick belongs to the GM in question.

Similar to last year, I’m hesitant to ascribe a value gained/lost. So I have once again opted for a bit of light commentary and a grade. Like I say every year, asset-value doesn’t always tell the full story of a team.

Without further ado, each team is listed below. The order is based on how well I think each team did in the transaction window this year, from worst to best.

Derrick Henry better have a damn good rest-of-season

Commentary: After averaging 18 trades a year over the last five seasons, TheCarlos made just 6 trades this window. Most were inconsequential – Jerome Ford was flipped for Raheem Mostert. Kimani Vidal was sold for a future 3rd. But the team ended up digging quite the hole when they gave up their 2026 1st for Stefon Diggs after multiple having multiple WRs end up on IR.

Diggs, who was the WR 12 at the time of the trade, went on to tear his ACL a month later. At 30, this is expected to effectively end the iconic receiver’s career. TheCarlos went on to make a further championship push by replacing Diggs with current RB 1 Derrick Henry at the cost of another 1st round pick. If Henry leads this team to playoff success then their trade sheet should be graded a higher in retrospect. But for now I have to assume this team will go another three years without a first round pick and with no championship to show for it.

Verdict: In the words of Les Snead: “Fuck them picks.”

Commentary: Granted this trade was made before the draft and RKMay desperately needed depth. But despite Keon Coleman looking promising, Brock Bowers is on track for the most receptions by a tight end ever. As a rookie. Currently Bowers is averaging 16 PPG to Coleman and Corum’s combined 10.

Verdict: Do you think DReid takes refunds if you still have the receipt?

The picks are projected to be in the 1.13 – 1.16 range

Commentary: WyattBrady’s first couple trades this year were plagued by bad luck. On paper, trading away aging pieces like Aaron Jones and Courtland Sutton were great moves. But Jones has found new life in Minnesota and Sutton is having a resurgence with Bo Nix. A top RB like Etienne is the perfect contending piece – until he injures his hamstring and is rendered handicapped all year. Buying low on Rashee Rice could be a clever gamble. Except for when Pat Mahomes smashes into him and injures his LCL just a few weeks into the season.

In another life, this team’s moves are enough to soundly make them a top team in Nilbog. There’s still potential here for a great 2025 season if Etienne bounces back, Rice avoids suspension, or Williams gets more than 4 targets per game. Unfortunately, the trade sheet currently tells a story of losing dynamic young players like Jahmyr Gibbs and Drake London without enough apparent talent or draft picks to make up for it.

Verdict: I’ll repeat my sentiments on this team from last year’s compendium: each of this team’s trades were reasonable in the moment. But when you look at the final result – it’s not good.

I don’t think this is that bad to be honest

Commentary: We’ll consider Irving for Stevenson a wash for the time being. Stevenson undoubtedly has the high floor going past this year but Irving has the higher ceiling. I think the team could have gotten a better quarterback for what is likely to end up the 1.02 but we may change our tune if Maye is still averaging 20 PPG a year from now.

Verdict: Worth giving up a 1st to lock down a franchise QB.

Commentary: TigersMom didn’t need another QB, and D’Andre Swift has significantly out performed expectations this season. But you only have to look at the GM before this to see they could have traded Drake Maye for the presumed 1.02 and a future 2nd instead. I think they’d rather have the picks.

Verdict: There’s still a chance for this team to make the post-season so maybe we shouldn’t write off the Swift acquisition.

Commentary: Let’s be honest, they didn’t have many trade assets to give up. And it probably wouldn’t make sense to end up trading future picks when rebuilding. It may have been worth trying to deal away Kareem Hunt or Taysom Hill, but with the team’s recent surge their GM may be hoping to pull out an underdog consolation bracket win for the 1.01.

Verdict: There’s hope for this team if Caleb Williams starts putting it together.

Commentary: The second year in a row of no trades. My commentary from last year still applies:

It’s hard to justify holding onto Saquon as opposed to getting a young WR or TE (or just a couple first round picks). But no trading means no getting fleeced.

Verdict: This was still probably for the best given the team’s trade history.

Plumbob

Number of Trades: 0

Commentary: After a promising 2023, Plumbob’s team has regressed this year. But there’s still a strong enough WR and TE corps that I don’t blame them for avoiding trades and coasting to a potential consolation championship. With luck they’ll earn the 1.01 and finally draft a franchise RB in 2025.

Verdict: Classic Plumbob.

HaffCaff

Commentary: Injuries to Brandon Aiyuk and Hollywood Brown absolutely killed HaffCaff’s ceiling this year. If the alternative to not trading was tilting and selling low on Aiyuk or LaPorta, it was the right decision to ride it out and run it back next year.

Verdict: Last year I said this was a sleeper team for 2024. This time, I’m saying that it’s a sleeper team for 2025.

Commentary: This team is in a good enough place they probably don’t need to trade for anybody. But their corps are thin enough it’s worth hanging onto their talent. Textbook no-trade-needed situation.

Verdict: Jordan Love snores like “honkshoo 😪 honkshoo 😪.” Russell Wilson snores like “snork mimimimi 😴 snork mimimimi 😴.” That’s why Jordan Love delivers Kenjifonn 23 PPG and Russell Wilson rides the fucking bench.

Verdict: Without a doubt, one of the trades of all time.

Still feels like you could’ve gotten more for him

Commentary: It must be so fucking tough being a Tee Higgins owner. His last GM was fed up with him so you bought him cheap because the analysts say he’s a stud. He delivers you 20 points in his first week and you think that last owner was a fucking chump for selling him to you in exchange for Christian Kirk. Then the 20 point games turn into 11 point games. Then 5 point games.

Every target Ja’Marr Chase gets causes you to curse under your breath. When you see Andrei Iosivas catch a touchdown on your pirated Redzone stream, you scream about how Higgins was “wide fucking open!” When you see a Reddit thread where Zac Taylor says they need to get Mike Gesicki more involved, you comment that they already have Tee Higgins and just don’t know how to use him. At work somebody mentions how it’s crazy the Bengals are 4-7. You tell them the Bengals would be 11-0 if they targeted Tee Higgins more. Your coworkers look at you in bewilderment and pity.

Every week he’s listed as questionable. You find out at 12:59 PM each Sunday whether he’ll be good to go. For the first few weeks, he is. Then it happens. He sits out practice all week, but Zac Taylor says they’re “feeling good” about him playing. He doesn’t. The next week he’s doubtful and you have to spend another week setting your lineup without your WR 2. The next week after that he’s back to questionable. “He’s always questionable,” you think. Surely he’ll return. He doesn’t. The week after that he’s back to “limited” in practice. You delude yourself into thinking there’s a chance he plays. He doesn’t.

After three weeks of absence, your tormentor returns. The Sleeper notification hits you like a bolt of lightning at the proverbial 12:59 PM one Sunday:

Tee Higgins is playing today.

You don’t put him in your lineup in case he’s on a snap count. He posts 100 yards and a touchdown. No worries, we’re so back. You’ve learned from your mistake. Higgins is finally back in your lineup where he belongs. After a four week stretch without your WR1-I-payed-a-WR3-price-for, you are finally reunited. You’ve forgotten the bad times. All you want is your boy back. Higgins gets 3 targets. Ja’Marr Chase gets a career high 20. After Chase’s third touchdown he does a viral TikTok dance while Higgins gets his hamstring massaged by a trainer on the sideline.

Your savior finally arrives. He offers you Bucky Irving for this living nightmare masquerading as a football player. It doesn’t matter that you already have Rachaad White. At least you’re guaranteed to end up with the Bucs RB1. More importantly, you’re guaranteed to pass the Higgins curse onto someone else. You’re finally free.

Higgins gets 20 points in his first game for the new team.

Verdict: Understandable.

Brother saw the future of a Nix/Sutton stack like Lisan al Gaib

Commentary: Nobody can deny the stewardship LBTown has shown this year. Pairing Courtland Sutton with Bo Nix was an excellent decision, creating a surprisingly successful stack that is averaging 38 PPG over the last seven weeks. Passing off Rashee Rice who copped a knee injury in short order and may miss substantial time next season due to suspension was pretty much a best case scenario. The only misstep was not getting more than a mid 2026 2nd for David Njoku who has been averaging over 12 PPG.

On that note, knowing when not to trade is as important as knowing when to trade, and LBTown was particularly wise to not sell low on trade-block pieces like David Montgomery and Zach Ertz. Despite offering them up for sale earlier in the season, they stayed on the team and have turned into the backbone of their playoff push.

Verdict: 8-3 with an extra 1st round pick next year is beautiful work.

He can’t keep getting away with it

Commentary: The FleeceMaster General is still in peak form. TSteggs took advantage of their depth this year to trade away aging assets for future picks. This could backfire if the 1sts end up being late picks and the team can’t capture a third championship without the help of Derrick Henry. But if nothing else, the GM should feel good about getting a 1st for team mascot Stefon Diggs a month before his devastating ACL injury.

Verdict: Rule One exists for a reason.

When “four quarters for a dollar” actually works

Commentary: When you’ve gone 66-12 in regular season play and made the playoffs for five straight seasons, it only makes sense to dump your picks and hang on to dominance. DReid’s trading over the past two seasons has been an absolute masterclass. Just look at the difference between the 2022 championship team and a current potential lineup.

The championship team from 2022 had an average age of 27.5 when they won the Goblin Bowl and averaged 121.8 PPG. The potential team listed above has an average age of 23.5 and is currently averaging 128.8 PPG. And it doesn’t even include Tyreek Hill, Amari Cooper, Joe Mixon, or Josh Jacobs who could end up as trade assets next year.

DReid may have only made two trades this year, but they were picture perfect examples of bundling excess assets to upgrade to better and younger players.

Verdict: Maybe we need a Rule Two.

That 2nd was used to purchase David Njoku

Commentary: Hoooooly shit Eliel was making moves this year. This GM had his guys, he went out and got them, and the result speaks for its self. Almost every player sold was sold at the height of their value. Almost every player purchased was purchased at the cheapest they could be acquired.

Trading Travis Etienne for Drake London worked out better than anybody expected. Spinning Rhamondre Stevenson into Tee Higgins is *chef’s kiss.* Turning D’Andre Swift into Drake Maye into the presumed 1.02 was like watching a master Japanese craftsman make a $500 soroban from a block of wood. For this team to have regained quality 1st round picks in 2025 and 2026 and still be en route to the playoffs is spectacular general managing.

Verdict: If Eliel learns how to draft the league is fucked.
